As Sev said, blip the throttle to match the RPMs of what the new gear (the gear you're downshifting into) is going to be, approximately. Whenever I down shift, I blip it a good 3-4K RPM....once you get good, you'll be able to do this while using the front brake as well to smooth things out even more, and it becomes second nature.

My thoughts are the same. If you do not blip the throttle after a downshift, the other thing to do is to release the clutch slowly so that the bikes eases into the difference of speed rather than catching abruptly if there is a significant difference.
I notice that a lot when I ride as I have not gotten the timing completely smooth on my downshifts due to that one handed operation. But its coming along. Just more practice on straight aways so you can get it smooth is all.
