My first bike was a Zanetti mini bike. Then a few dirt bikes. My first roadworthy motorcycle was a Kawasaki 550 LTD, in 1985. After 20 years and several used ones, I finally bought a new Honda VTX 1300 in 2005. Had it less than a year, and bought a Gold wing. Then a project vulcan. And a Yamaha route 66 250 for my wife. Have since sold all but the 250 and the Gold Wing. Turns out, I ride the 250 more than she does. She would rather ride on the back of the wing. It is quality time together.

Congrats! Pics would be cool. What were the donor bikes? Something built by a family member is something to cherish.

There was no way I was going to start motorcycling with a motorcycle. I knew better.
I started with an MSF training class.
After I graduated from the training course, I got a full-face helmet. Once I had one of those, I bought a leather armored 2-piece racing suit.
Shortly after finding the suit, I got some reinforced leather gloves and leather boots.
Finally, I got a Ninja 250 to go with it all.
So you got a Ninja 250 to start with. Cool.

I started on a '76 Kaw KZ400 that looked just like this one :
3 of my friends learned to ride on it before me, so by the time I bought it, it was only 3 yrs. old, but very well used. As I recall, I paid a whole $400 for it.
Hey Thomas! Post a pic of your Frankenbike if you can. I love those things!

thomascarlson wrote:Hello everyone! I just recently got a custom built motorcycle. I am new to motorcycles. This thing was built by my uncle and is not the best looking bike, but I do like riding it. I am still not very comfortable riding it, but I feel better about it every time I take it out. I am hoping to get better at riding and then getting something better.Anyway, I am just excited about my new bike and was looking for a new community to share this great experience!I would like to know what type of motorcycle did each of you start out with?Mine is a custom bike similar to a Honda, my uncle built it with spare parts.Thomas
Try riding with experienced bikes. The more you ride the more confidence you'll have. Just
dont EVER get over confident. That only leads to one place.
Enjoy your new ride. Have someone check the bike out. Those 'garage bikes' are not necessarly the safest things to come down the pike.
Good luck.
