If there's a Royal Purple fan here, please tell me why it's so great. I stopped by my Napa yesterday to get a couple things and asked if they carried Amsoil or any other kind of motorcycle oil. He said they stopped carrying Amsoil because the shipping on that brand was too high. He said he could get some Royal Purple in tomorrow (today). I said great and went home.

I did some searching on a Katana forum and while many people didn't use it, someone mentioned it was $9/quart. I went to pick up the oil today and said, "This stuff's like $9 a quart, isn't it?" The guy said he didn't know and started to ring it up. He couldn't hide his surprise, looked at me apologetically and tried to say with a straight face, "It's $10.(something)."

I was like, "Dude, unless this stuff has magic fairy dust in it, you guys are going to have to stock something a little cheaper for me in about 3k miles." I bought 5 quarts today, but I can't see myself buying any more.

Doing the oil change today, I had to shake my head when I realized why it was called Royal Purple.

These topics are always fun because there's so many people with different experiences. Whatever you run, change it at or before the manufacturer's recommended intervals. If you often make short trips, change it more often.

That said, I've had good experiences and had oil analyzed for Castrol GTX (automotive) and Mobil 1 (automotive). In the next few months I'll be seeing how AMSOIL motorcycle oil holds up.

totalmotorcycle: Give the NAPA Gold oil filters a shot. Last time I checked they were rebranded Wix filters but cheaper. NAPA also gives a discount for AAA members, but that might only be in the States.

I use SuperTech from Wal-Mart in my VL800 and the weedwacker two stroke oil in my Vino. (synthetic)

No problems with either. I change the oil and filter every 4000mi. on the VL.

Dealer told me that if you change your oil at normal intervals, the only difference is how often you end up changing it. I start to disagree based on the standards the oil are made by as there is more than just how often you change it but he was dug in.

It goes to show we all have are dug in opinions and no chart can change someones mind if dug into their position. :frusty:

That's my favorite brand of oil filter for the past several years. :D Your right, Napa Gold is Wix. I'll look into any sort of discount here in Canada for them, we have CAA, but I've never asked if you get a discount on parts from UAP/Napa. :humm:

Shell Advanced. It is what the dealer pushes for Ducatis, so I figure why be a cheapskate, it isn't that much more. I don't put a whole lot of miles on the duke anyway.

Well, I've put a couple hundred miles on the bike since I changed the oil and I don't notice anything different. Maybe it extends engine life, maybe it runs a little cooler, maybe you can go longer between oil changes, maybe it makes your twigs and barries larger - I don't know.

I certainly haven't seen anything that make me want to spend $10 something a quart again.
