I rode a Aero for 3 years. I know what you're talking about. I know for a fact that it'll run all day long at 85 to 90 mph but still, the feeling that it's straining isn't pleasant. The Shadow is a great bike but I suspect that what you're experiencing is the main reason people upgrade from it to something bigger. I also suspect that this is the reason the Shadow's resale value is so low. The market is flooded with them. :(

What kind of bike do you have? Rebel 250 or something?
At 55 mph the Rebel is only reving at 5500rpm. It redlines at about 8500 rpm. Mine will cruise at 75mph all day long.

For what it's worth if you're working your way UP the gears the rev limiter will kill the ignition before you do damage to the engine. It's not a good idea to do this to often though.

If you spool it up to high speed, then drop down a couple of gears and let the clutch out you'll have valve meet piston to horrendous results.

Basically, feel free to rev it freely... just pay attention to how the bike sounds right before the rev limiter kills it. Don't push it that fast again.

My friend has an 01 750 ACE, and he's done 140kmh before easily.
