Your brake lines are probably contributing to the feeling. They, I assume, are rather old. The lines will expand a bit under pressure. As long as the brakes are doing their job I wouldn't worry. If you want to get involved you can switch to braided steel lines to improve brake feel.

Sometimes repeated pumping of the brakes aerates the brake fluid. Try gravity bleeding after letting it sit overnight. Phoenix makes a great brake fluid injector which you can use to reverse flush the fluid. Works great for systems which have air pockets and are habitually hard to bleed. Keep your brake fluid sealed. It is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture out of the air). And do take a look at the rubber brake hoses.
