My girlfriend was able to get a 2003 blue ninja 250 for 1700. It has a small dent in the tank and a bit of rust on the exhaust pipe but not bad at all for the price.
Plenty of deals to be had on the ninja 250.

I'm told that the 500 and the 250 have different ergonomics - so you'd need to try them both out to see which is the best fit.
Oddly some of the tall guys have come back here and said the 250 was more comfortable.

When I go to the dealership I'll try both out. And after thinking about financing the motorcycle for about 7 seconds I realized that I wont be able to do that for the big reason that I don't have a job. And once I decide which of the bikes is more comfortable or if both I'll just check out a couple of local bikes. If I end up not liking the Ninjas whats a good alternative bike? My brother told me I should get a Nighthawk because they are very reliable.

Any chance you can find a Ninja 500R for a slightly higher price? It seems that bike would be better and it's also street newbie friendly.
I got stuck with the cruiser version of that engine....

unless i can sell my computer I actually only have 1900 to buy a bike insurance and food for the rest of the year. I expect to sell my computer for $800 putting 2700 in my hands. If I figure paying half a year of insurance I'm left with 2425. And 200 for food I'm left with 2225 to spend on a bike. I've been scowering and there are not many Ninja 500Rs in my area. Ive seem the 250 and mid 90's bikes like CBRs and similar bikes. But atm I am really focusing on a 500R. If I cant find one what is an equivelant bike?

Start looking for a job...if you like bikes enough it'll be worth it, even if you don't feel like it.
