That distinctive "sport bike sound" is really only made by the high end bikes. Not to disappoint you and definitely NOT to push you towards them, just saying.

I was in your position at one point. I wanted a sport bike so bad. But now that I've got 4000+ miles of riding under my belt, I've really changed my tune. The reality of a sport bike is very different from the fantasy.

So with that, just get a good beginner's bike and learn to ride. From there you'll have a much better idea of what kind of bike you ultimately want.

I understand what you all are saying, and I know I should really start off slow (with that 250cc many people have recommended). I like the distinctive "vroom" sound of the highend motorbikes. It takes a lot of skill to master all of it, and yeah, I may never buy a Hyabusa. It is just a dream (fantasy if you will) of mine. Someday...Yes I will definitly buy one.

Thank you all for the support (light) critisim (don't mind it at all really) and suggestions as to what to do, and what not to do (worth buying a motorcycle).

Motorcycle riding is a joy hard to describe. You have to do it to appreciate it. Even though I can't ride very long due to back injuries I couldn't go another year without a bike so bought something very inexpensive so I won't feel guilty about having something I can't use that much sitting in the garage.

We like seeing newbies learn about bikes. The dangers involved are very real. When on the street alot of people act like you're not even there, this happens with some regularity.

I'm very glad you're listening. A lot of people didn't and ended up injured or dead, in either case they don't ride anymore even if they lived because they're afraid of it. The person in control is you.

Oh yeah, I know all the risks involved with riding a motorcycle. That is why I want to get a couple friends (who already have them) and see if I can use the race track (Berlin Raceway) which is within 10 miles of my house, and use that track to practice for a couple weeks before I take it on the road.

Lets say I end up buying a Ninja 250cc and ride it around. After a while when I get used to it, could I add some performance parts to it, so it could feel like a 500cc? (If you get what I mean) that way I don't have to buy a 500cc just to see what it is like. And so I don't ruin a 500cc.

(That is a little hard for me to understand, so if you don't understand what I'm trying to say, then please ask)

I think most would agree the Ninja 500 is also a perfectly fine first bike. It's got more power than the 250, but not by huge margins. They are both rather tame bikes. But don't take that the wrong way, a ninja 250 and 500 can still kick a lot of butt, they can out accelerate most cars.

It's better to damage an older used bike obviously.
Better on what? They both cost money to fix.
A 600cc rocket or larger is wayyyy to dangerous for any beginner.
Hardly. There are PLENTY of 600cc bikes that are fine for beginners.
We like seeing newbies learn about bikes.

As for the sound of a high-end bike. . .really? I mean, you're gonna buy a bike based off the "sound". Why not just get aftermarket pipes and load it onto something more economical?

I think what he is saying, is that why do that, when you can just get a 500 which will last you awhile. Or better yet - an SV650S. Has a sporty riding position, nice MPG. . .looks sexy on the front. Or the 650R. More sporty look, has NINJA slapped on it. Wont feel too crazy if you treat it well.

Thanks for your opinion, and I'll look into that SV650S

I'm thinking I'll buy a used Ninja 250cc for... $600 (rougly) that is in decent shape, but needs some body touching up, or some other small minor details.

I wouldn't touch a $600 Ninja 250 with a 10ft stick.

Or anything that needs "small minor details". I know its good to think of man as having certain qualities we like to see in ourselves - but fact is, when someone wants to get rid of something, their memory gets fuzzy, and "scratches on the tank" become "fuel leaks"

If you're insistent on buying used, then buy used that is described as being in perfect condition, and none of this "Its great. . .but" nonsense. It's either good condition with NORMAL wear, or it aint.

If youre set on a 250 - 2K for something 2000 and newer is all you should be paying.
