Try this place...
http://www.carbonfiberhelmets.com/dot.htm
they have a line of thinner DOT approved helmets. I personally wear a full face because I like my face the way it is - to each their own though.

If you get a half shell, get the Police style. They are much better and comfortable than the barely legal ones. Don't know about the exotics like Fritz and Lazer. For half shell i prefer HJC Police helmet. But I have 4 half shells, 5 3/4s, and 2 modulars. Oh and one party style. (most are old and kept for sentimental reasons, and no longer worn)

They're good for making the cagers perk up, as well. Anything that activates their "is that a cop?" reflex will reduce their do-something-stupid potential.

I personally have both a half helmet and a full face. To be perfectly honest I'v only worn the 1/2 helmet for the MSF Course, since then it's been full face all the way. On my first ride in public I was crusin alsong at 40-45 and a leaf hit my face shield. Would you believe that I actually heard the "CLUNK" and felt the vibration? Imagine that hitting your exposed nose. I have kept the half helmet for a spare. That way I have something to wear on my my to the moto shop to buy a new full face if I ever drop it on a hard surface.

Leaves don't hurt. I've been hit by several.
The worst I've gotten so far in the face is a pebble kicked up by a truck on the interstate. That didn't hurt either.
The worst I've gotten overall is a bee that somehow dove up my sleeve and stung my arm at 50 mph. I didn't know what it was til I pulled over and took the jacket off. It was the first time I'd ever gotten stung by a bee.
