Helmet caused neck injuries?

I will definitely be wearing a helmet when I get riding but what's this about extra liability for neck injuries while wearing a helmet?
Number 52 disproves it but I'm curious to know why they needed to address that.
Is there anything that can be done to further protect your neck in a crash?

Some of the anti-helmet crowd think if you crash with a helmet on, your neck will snap from the extra weight of the lid.

Cool, Thanks for the info.
I see how they'd make that argument but the protection for your brain seems just a *bit* more important than the small amount of extra weight on your neck.

Notice the date of the Hnt Report...it was done in 1981!
How about we get something a little more recent before we start basing all of our assumtions, beliefs, etc. on something so political and biased.

I believe I heard that there is a "new Hurt report" in the works.
But what's so "political and biased" about the Hurt report?

Hurt made his data available to anyone that wanted to review them. It was probably one of the least biased studies of its time.
It is old and out of date, but you'd be hard pressed to call it "political and biased". If we're lucky, the new study will be as open as Hurt was.

Is there anyone out there that uses one of those braces? Also, I'm looking at getting a jacket because going without is starting to get scary. Anyone have any tips on what to get that won't get too hot in the summer sun? (while I live in Fargo, it does get into the 90's pretty easy in the summer)

I thought I'd link this. Since his original report posted in this thread, Hurt made some statements about a lot of Snell helmets being worse than DOT. Essentially the increased foam density makes really bad accidents better on your brain, it takes more damage in the the more common accidents.

There
were several neck injuries associated with full face helmets, due to design problems. (actually using a full face designed more for auto drag racing than motorcycle use) A hard hit on the chin could snap your neck with many early full face helmets. Most MC helmets made after about 1980 have the neck area re-designed to prevent this.
