ok, so i have been using the 87 untill today... i did what the guys at work said and ran 91oct... bike ran great...
usually i would get about 80 miles before the tank guage showed empty... and i would fill and put approx 3.5-3.8 gal in...
today i put in 91oct and went on a nice trip through the desert on a trip we call vulture mine road/hill...
at the start i filled up, i am now at 100miles on the tank guage and i still have just under a quarter tank left...
so even though its more expensive in the long run, the bike seems to run better, and i get more miles to the tank... so far...
let me know if what im doing sounds bad.
and no manufact. book yet... so not sure on recomended octane.
anyone know that info?

The difference in gas mileage is probably more the result of the type of riding you did on that tank, rather than the type of gas.
Octane simply doesn't work the way your friends describe. It's only purpose is to keep gasoline from exploding in the cylinders prematurely (which causes pinging/knocking).
I don't know what you mean when you say it "runs better". If it was knocking and now it's not, then you're on the right track. Otherwise, there's nothing in higher octane fuel that will make your bike run better. Octane is simply an anti-knock index.

ok, so u got something there...
once back to in town riding, the mileage went down a little...
i think i will just run 89oct... i think the difference in how it runs is simply me not hearing the motor now that i have the pipes...
i did take the air filter out and clean it, it wasnt too bad, but it was dirty, and i had the oil changed and oil for the drive shaft changed too...
and i sprayed some carb cleaner in a few times...
i might be doing a rather long ride next week, so ill see how well it does... i am hoping that i can atleast get 130miles to a tank... that would be nice.
i am planning on riding from phx to denver... hopefully it works out...
thanks again for input

If you normally do most of your riding around town, I think you'll be surprised at how much the mileage improves on a long highway ride.
My Nighthawk reliably turns in 41 mpg around town. When I get it out on the highway, it'll easily get 47 mpg, even though I'm usually doing 80+ mph. If I just cruise along at around 65 mph, it's right around 50 mpg (which gets me 200 miles to reserve).

use 87 oct...and try to find it with out eth in it...its not to great for bikes especially if u just do short ride...(doesnt heat up enough to burn the eth.) most bikes are meant to run on 87 and nothing better...if i put in 91 it just a waste of money...
btw... a place by me have 100oct...i use to get it back in my street riding days....
