Yamaha has some sort of cleaner at their dealerships as well that I was told (at a Kawi/honda dealership) is one of the best products to get melted boot sole of exhaust...so if the other dealers were steering me to a competator....

According to Cobra who makes aftermarket exhaust systems, they say to use "Easy Off" oven cleaner on those spots where something is melted on the pipe.
The instructions are : Wait until the pipe is cool to the touch, apply the "Easy Off" and let it sit all night. The next day, rinse with cold water. Be careful not to get "Easy Off" on any painted surfaces.
I haven't tried it yet, but I will the next time I get road tar on my pipes.
