Old?
WTF?
I think that an 18 year old has no business on public streets on a motorcycle.
A motorcycle is a *terrible* vehicle to use to learn how to survive on the road. Use the safety of a car to get experience with traffic. There's a lot to get used to out there, from habits of other drivers to traffic pattern reading, road surface recognition, etc etc.

Its always better to wait, I was looking at bike way before I got my first car. When I eventually did save up the money for a bike, I found one with only half the mileage of my bike about 2 weeks after I purchased mine.. If you're 18 you should be on your own in not to long anyways.
When I first asked for a bike my parents were hesitant but said sure they'd love to have me out on a bike with them. When I showed them the picture of the red sport bike is when I was back in the same boat with every other young kid that wants a bike lol.

Sorry but we don't agree. The earlier you start the better rider you will end up. If I "pee" you off with my opinions that is ok. Opinions are like buttholes we all have one.

I agree olebiker, atleast where I'm from that's what everyone thinks. Guess if I ever have a kid and he starts riding at 18 i tell him to steer clear of upstate NY

Show some responsibility and take a rider safety course. The community colleges here offer a three day course (they even supply the bikes) which qualifys as the road portion of you motorcycle license endorsement.

Try asking for a trail bike first something off road to get some experience. Should get some more driving time under your belt before street riding.

any other ideas to make bikes sound better to my mom
When you turn 18. Get a job and move out. Then you can do what ever you want. Nothing shows more responsibility than that.

My mom said I can get a bike when I have a job and move out, but I said, "Whoa.... I'm only 45, what's the rush ?"

Only 45? I'd like to intoduce you to my daughter. She's turning 40 and is living at home.
