The Swerve is about avoidance/quick recovery. Leaning is NOT okay. The exercise is designed to give you practice avoiding something on the road when you're going to fast to stop to avoid it.

You're supposed to keep your head/shoulders in line with the path of travel and push the handlebars to one side to avoid and the other way to recover. If you LEAN while doing this, you make the whole process take too long.

In the practice swerves I kept leaning and I was having a really hard time just moving the handle bars without leaning at all. The instructor said to just move my hands not my elbows. How exactly can I do that and are there any hints or tricks you all can give me?
If you think about putting your weight on the footpegs, not the seat, it should be easier. You don't need to stand up, just transfer your weight.

+1 to Lion_Lady with the great tips. When I was trying to do my U-Turns this also helped a great deal. It's weird how a lot of what the Body does is subconscious. I over shot a turn once because I wasn't Looking where I wanted to go.

This same trick by focusing on your feet and not your seat helps a lot.
