Me being 5'11" 225, I bought a GS500F. The 500 is a perfect amount of CC's at least IMHO. I am comfortable on it after only a few months of riding. I plan next summer at looking at the shadow 750's. But for now I am overly happy with my 500. One thing nice about the GS, is it has the sport bike look, but the rider position is more upright, and the handle bars are higher, so your not laying on your tank.
Another cool thing is it gets confused sometimes as being a gsxr

silly people!

Going to chip to support Nibblet.
Did my time on a 125, have spent time on 500cc bikes and trike - currently riding a 1984 24bhp 250cc that I proved I could deadlift at Keyoke's stag event.
I've been chipping around on it for slightly over 6 months with a leaking head gasket still getting 80mph out of it.
I stand 6'4 tall and weigh somewhere just over 14 stone.

Try looking into the Suzuki Bandit 400, A friend of mine beginner as well tried it and fell in love with it. It has also a great sound, check it out:

It's an awesome bike I believe, I would by it myself but I'm more of a beginner than my friend. I'm looking into buying a ninja 250 R. The differences between the two are:
-One it's 250cc the other 400cc more power, but still managable
-One has a body, the other one is naked, or "standard" so if it falls there will not be as much damage as if the 250 fell.
-The price difference is not enormous you can find the 250 used in good conditions a couple of years old for $2.500, the other one around $3.500.
=The bandit it's a havier bike and more aggressive a believe, for your body type I think the bandit is best, but the 250 is not a toy, Never judge a book by its cover.
If I had the money I would go for the bandit with my eyes closed. But poor me....
Good luck and remeber to ride safe!
