Here is the interesting thing.

All children no matter where they are born in the world start off hearing everything. They then learn to tune out noises, keying in on their parents sounds until they can make sense of them.

By which time they can no longer 'hear' other noises, hence the difficulties that some Natonalities have with English and why some of the African languages just sound like random clicks to English speakers.

yeah, it's pretty amazing. i have a 19 month old. she's saying some words but for months she's been "talking" making all sorts of odd sounds. it's amazing the things she can make her mouth do.

and an issue of hearing - in grad school one of my friends was from japan. we talked about this. i said "take a right at the light" and to him right and light were the same word. i thought it was an aspect of making the tongue work, but he couldn't even hear the difference so there was no way he could say the difference. amazing how the human body is set up and works. it's an amazing design.
