lol my dad used to bring his gun to school to hunt after. He also didnt even get a slap on the wrist for standing up to some kids who were known to be big bullies. Sent one of them packing with a bloody nose and all he got from the principle was "hey, try to stay out of fights, okay?" Now he would have been suspended for as long as the group who started it.

I didn't mean to imply that things were better... Don't get me wrong. But a lot of things that would get you arrested/medicated/shot today weren't such a big deal back then. Heck, I've been diagnosed with ADD. I honestly don't think I have it (none of the meds helped) I think I just like to fidget and move quickly through things. Personally I like to carry knives. Hell, my friend just got robbed tonight by a guy with a side by side shotgun. (He works late nights in a popcorn store) If he'd have started carrying a knife like I told him to he'd have had a couple of opportunities to stop it. But no matter where you are now they frown on carrying knives or anything...

So how great was it 50 years ago when you were -17? ;)

I get the impression people think kids are diagnosed with ADD a lot more often than they actually are. My mom teaches special ed, and it's fairly difficult to get kids in for testing to find out if they have it. That's not to stop people from saying they have ADD when they don't though, I suppose.

Wrider...gun vs knife almost always loses. Statistically speaking your friend had the odds stacked way against him should he have decided to fight back. I'm not saying people don't have a right to carry and defend themselves..just the reality of gun vs knife isn't pretty for the victim.

I got into a pretty major fight my senior year in high school with a girl who was a bully. I broke her nose and she ended up leaving to go to the hospital to have it fixed. She instigated it, I had witnesses backing me up..I got in no trouble at all. This was 1997. I don't believe that every school is crazy - but some certainly are.

Quote frankly, I think a lot of the problems we see today are from the people who grew up in these "awesome" times who aren't raising their kids to be responsible. Sure, it's been happening for years..but this "me first" generation of a-holes who all think they are special (because mommy told them so!) are a much much larger problem than anything on that list, IMO. That probably relates back to the ADD issue. Of course mommy's little angel is just acting out because s/he has ADD, not because they're a little "poo poo head"! Ugh. Drives me bonkers.

The medical community considers it to be grossly over diagnosed. Mainly due to family practitioners who's parents demand the diagnosis. They want to keep their business so they fold under the pressure but get more regular appointments. ADD/ADHD should be diagnosed by a developmental specialist like a child neurologist.
My mom teaches special ed, and it's fairly difficult to get kids in for testing to find out if they have it. That's not to stop people from saying they have ADD when they don't though, I suppose.
Again, limited number of child neurologists or other developmental specialists to be able to perform the test. However, all you legally need to claim ADD is ANY doctor saying it's ok. Ring up the ol family friend or family practitioner and complain enough and you're in.
I'm not saying people don't have a right to carry and defend themselves..just the reality of gun vs knife isn't pretty for the victim.
+1- I'd rather give up my wallet than take the risk of anyone getting hurt in that situation. Number one goal is surviving the situation.

I think a lot of the troubles going on right now are because everyone is only out for themselves. Gone are the days when people are willing to pull over to help someone change a flat, know who your neighbors are, say hello to the people you meet and the other common niceties that you'd expect out of a civilization. With computers, texting and new video games we're becoming less and less social and when we don't have other people to keep things in perspective- things get out of hand.

Also most parents suck at parenting and standardized testing is dumbing down our entire country. (thought I could stir this up some more)

Back in 2000 approximately 3-5% of kids in the US were diagnosed as having ADD. Today, in many parts of the US 10-12% is the more usual figure. In the UK, the 2001 figure was 2%. I don't know what the current figure is.

That's a collossal number. Almost invariably Ritalin (MPH) is prescribed for ADD and ADHD. It's an addictive drug and mimics the properties of cocaine.

But it gets worse. Ritalin is prescribed for almost any child who shows signs of hyperactivity, impulsivenhess or inattention, even if they don't meet the exact definitions of ADD and ADHD. Back in 2000, again, it was already estimated that one in seven kids in the US were taking it daily. Again I don't know theexact current figure but it hasn't gone down, and has probably risen.

I agree, but there is also quite a lot of evidence for a dietary cause of the main symptoms - principally a lack of essential fatty acids.
