The first big Ninja came to the US market in 84, a ZX900 with a 908cc engine. It was a great year for motorcycling because I got my 1st bike at age 52 that year, a CB400T.

The cruiser style 454 LTD arrived here a year later in 85 with the engine that is now in the Ninja 500 and Vulcan 500 bikes. Some magazine writers referred to it as the half a Ninja engine because it shared bore and stroke and some parts with the 908 cc Ninja engine. The 454 LTD became the Vulcan 500 in 1990.

The EX500 arrived here in the US in 86 a year after the 454 LTD as a sport standard type bike that was known as the GPZ500 on the European market. It had a major redesign in 94 with a change from 16" to 17" wheels and change to disc rear brake and was then called a Ninja 500 on the US market remaining a GPZ500 abroad.

blitzfire, I never suggest a 250cc bike as a first bike for someone your size, only for smaller persons. A 500cc sport/standard type bike or a cruiser up to 750/800 cc should work for you or me.

The Ninja 500/GS500 are excellent starter bikes and while they are great bikes to start on they are also good bikes to ride for many years to come. They can do it all in the hands of an experienced rider.

After putting almost a quarter million miles on four 400-750 cc Hondas, I got a 97 GS500 in 99. I've done 400-500 mile freeway days on it getting to the mountains to ride with friends with bikes of all sizes and had a ball doing it. I put 80k miles on that GS and when it was totalled in 03 I bought a slightly used 02 GS500, my current ride that now has over 57k miles on it.

I was 6' 2" and about 240# when I bought the first GS500 and am now just below 6' tall and have been up to 250-260# since then and back down to 240# so I'm about the same size as you are.

Well, thank you to everyone who helped me out. With your advice, I enlisted a friend of mine who has been riding for around 15 years to go with me to look at a few bikes.

We finally found a great deal on a slightly used 2001 Suzuki Savage 650. Went and tested it. I got to putt around in the seller's driveway for a little while, getting the feel for the slower speeds (which I'll be doing for a while anyway), and had my friend test drive it (since I technically can't until I pass the written portion of my test). It's in immaculate shape, and is a wonderful machine.

We brought it home tonight, and the hardest part of all is that I can't ride it yet! I'm going to hit up the written portion of my test next week, and then I'll be heading to empty parking lots to practice for a couple months, then use it to commute to work a couple days a week.

But what I'm REALLY looking forward to is a work-sponsored trip coming up soon to Mount Magazine here in Arkansas. The weather will have warmed up considerably by then, and I'll be ready to jump back in the saddle for a nice, long break in with my new baby.

Again, thank you all sooo much for your help and advice. I would put up some pics, but there are some already up at the following (the previous owner put it on bikepics.com):

PS: Yes, that is a red paint job. The previous owner had the original paint removed at a local body shop, and the same color that is used for Dodge Vipers was used here. It looks really, really sharp up close.

Congrats on the new Savage, I think it's a good choice for you. So far I've been hanging onto the GS500s while looking for a small cruiser that will be lower for me due to advancing age. Getting harder every year to throw a leg over the taller bikes. Nice pics, that sure is red.

The Savage now called a Boulevard S40 and the Vulcan 500 are on top of my list of possible future choices. Have been dropping into a pretty good Savage/S40 forum that you might be interested in, much info there on the bike:

Good luck with the thumper. I did not like the one we had, but it was more an emotional dislike than a quantafiable dislike :-)

It does handle well. I rode Deal's Gap on mine, which was good because you can really wind out 2nd and 3rd gear. I was dragging pegs on the thing afterwards.

Long rides can be a problem, as there is not much room for storage. Mine would not break 85mph coming down from the mountains. It is good for getting around town joy-riding.
