It is all about how the manufacturer sets up the powerband.

Twins are easier to make torque down low, and most buyers expect that kind of powerband with a twin. However, there are plenty of exotic twins that have their power up top like an inline 4.

Same thing with 4 cyls... Everyone wants peak power, so they tune for that. However, consider the older UJM standards. They were all inline fours, they had a lot of torque (comparatively), and had a great low end. My 79 KZ650 has about 50 ft-lbs and 60 hp. It doesn't like to get much over 110-115mph either... It is definitely set up for around town riding. Look at the inline four cruisers they made in the 80s, all of them were praised for having the great top-end power of the sport/standards, but they were still tuned for low end power.

The problem with the FZ6 is that they wanted to keep those peak HP numbers on the dyno... so they didn't recalibrate the powerband, because they thought that is what people wanted. If they were to retune the engine for more power over the whole range, you'd likely see better off the line and around town performance.

That's my experience too. My wife's Trophy (1200 cc I-4) pulls smooth and clean from below 2K RPMs. My V-strom (1000 cc twin) bucks and snorts if you even think about putting load on it below 3K. (But it's still running a stock map which is way too lean down there. Gotta find that round tuit some day and update that sucker... ) It really wants to be at 4K, and has quite a power surge 5-7K.

Go listen to a ducati or aprilia with a good aftermarket exhaust on em sometime, they definately wont be mistaken for a harley.

Let's talk about triples. Low end grunt of a V-twin and top end of a four banger.
