you should inform Mr. Thompson that the rule against ending a sentence with a preposition was improperly carried over from latin by over-zealous intellectual types who thought that latin was superior to english and therefore imposing latin grammar on it might make it somehow more sophisticated. :]
That is the sort of nonsense up with which I will not put!!

According to my agent, State Farm only cared about the year of manufacture, and the size of the engine, when setting prices.
Right now I'm with Farmers (home, vehicles, life, etc.). I thought it would be cheaper to just add a bike to all that, but apparently not. I've talked to my agent about it, and for some reason, EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE SMALLER ENGINES THAN OTHER BIKES, the GS500F and the Ninga 250R are expensive to insure. The 500 is a "superbike," and not insurable through Farmers, and the Ninja is about 100/month.
I'm 26 years old....that seems incredibly high for a 250....when I can insure a V-Strom 650 for about 30/month! Funny, too, is that the Ninja is one of the cheapest bikes there are, and as most people say, it's a great starter bike. Frustrating for sure!
I looked into Progressive online yesterday, and the Ninja there was also about 100/month, but I'll keep checking around.

Wow ... that's crazy. I've had my M2 license for exactly 14 days. I bought an '08 Ninja 500 10 days ago and my insurance is $900/yr. I'm in Toronto and went with Riders Plus Insurance which deals only with motorcycles. I too thought it would be cheaper to go with the same company holding my car, life and auto policies, but not so much. And they didn't ask gender so I'm assuming the rate is not because I'm female, though being over 25 helps.
Keep shopping around for quotes and try the "specialty" insurance companies ... once you get your safety course completed you can use that for a bit of a discount at most places as well.
BTW, the Ninja rocks!

Try getting on-the-phone quotes. I've heard other people complain that Geico and Progressive online quotes were higher than phone quotes.
Thinking about it, when I was trying to decide between the SV 650 and a Yamaha FZ6 I tried online quotes and they were coming in at $2000/year+ yet when I got the actual insurance it was less than $400/year for the SV. Granted, I'm a lot older than you and haven't had a ticket since I was younger than you, but it shouldn't make that much difference, especially since my 25 year old is on my bike insurance and has been since he was 23.

i got an online quote from progressive to insure an 06 suzuki gz250 and it came to just over $200 a year. i'm nineteen years old, male, and have about six at-fault accidents and speeding tickets on my record (shut up).
there is no way you should be paying $100 a month.
that said, what kind of coverage do you want? my $200 a year is for minimum coverage; i unchecked all the little boxes i could. if you want collision insurance or anything else it'll start adding up.

I want more coverage than that. I definitely want comp and collision, so that if something happens to my bike, I can get it fixed. I'm hoping that I don't have any at-fault accidents with a bike, but hey, you can never be too sure. I also put in a $500 deductible (since I don't want to have to pay out the rear for fixes should they be needed). So yeah, I'm sure that's jacking up the rate.
But I did find a cool rate on progressive.com for the Ninja 500. It's the same to insure as the 250. Crazy, isn't it? (about 600/year, much lower than my current company, Farmes)
Speaking of Ninja 500R, I actually sat on one tonight. Went to a dealer and they had an 07 on the floor. First time I've ever been on a bike (besides a bicycle). Won't lie, gave me the jitters. Too bad I couldn't buy it right then and there. It's a SWEET BIKE!
I'm waiting to see if a 250 comes in. The guy said that they might get one or two in in June, and said he'd call if they get one. They're much cheaper, a bit smaller, and would be the perfect beginner bike for me. If they get one, I may just have to go buy it.

I'll be the devil that sits on your shoulder and whispers in your ear...
It's a good first bike. Might even be a long term bike. It's shiny and it will purr for you.
No, really, take the class first...but it is a good first bike...

Thanks! I wanted it SOOOO BAD! But I'm going to wait till I get my permit and take the class. I'm sure it's not the only Ninja 500 (or 250 if I can find one) floating around fo sale. My bike will "find" me when it's time, I have faith in that.
