Ditto. My son has a 1994 vulcan 500. Same power, but slightly different riding position. Although it's a good starter bike, it does have sufficient oomph to get you in trouble with zero experience (as all bikes do). I'm sure he would tell you the same thing.Telesque wrote:If you don't have a cyclist friend, and you can't get a truck...
Maybe you could offer to drive the guy home if he rode the bike out to where you live? Sure, it's 100 miles, but if there's no other options...
Just.. don't ride it. No one's first time should *ever* be in a live-traffic situation, let alone highway riding.

The next weekend after I graduated the MSF (I had already taken my written, so I just took the certificate down and got my M) I found my Virago about 45 miles away. Well being the jerk that I am, I had my wife haul me out and get it. She had her Explorer, and I brought my shiny new HJC, jacket, gloves and boots. Well, I was thinking I was just gonna get on it and zoom home. As it turns out I ended up plodding along at about 45 mph in a 55, wife trailing me the whole way. I was pretty scared and a lot excited. My wife harassed me for a week or so (mr big motorcycle guy scared to go to fast). Well I made it and now it doesn't take me so long to get out there, but sometimes things just work out. At any rate, so began my love for two wheels, and here I am today, about 15,000 miles wiser.
Bottom line, if I had to do it over again, I am still a jerk and would have rode it, but then again, I am not the smartest roach to come up through the drain.

ya dont ride it home. when i bought my latest bike it was a good 75mile trek away. i hadnt rode for a good year almost after my accident adn decided not to ride it home. the guy i bought it from saw it was fair that he ride it out to me since i made the first drive out to him to see the bike. just make the deal if you really want it then ask he he could ride it out, offer him a ride back home or enough gas money to cover the cost of a car following him. if that doesnt work as if you can leave it there a day or so then go get a uhaul for 30 bucks and drive it back.

You might be able to get the owner to ride it over for you, OR you might be able to track down a friend who'll get it there for you!
I'd say with zero experience you don't want to be hitting the freeway... that's TOTALLY something to work your way up to.

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
