$130 is gas for two weeks in my car. The thing is my imagination doesn't exist past $100. I'll see if any of the mechanic guys around here have such a tool but I doubt they will lend me. No harm in trying I guess.

we call them slap hammers and the one we have at work are $300.

I think I'll have to get a mortgage for the tools I need.

Had my eyes set on these:

YU-08036 Inductive Tachometer $307.98

YM-91042 Universal Clutch Holder $31.65

YU-01083 Slide Hammer Set $123.33

YU-33261 Electro Tester $514.62

YU-33223 Compression Gauge $51.75

The prices were quoted to me from an online bike parts supplier. Mostly Yamaha tools. I will try to decide which I need most right now. I reckon (for a valve & clutch job) I'll at least need the slide hammer, the Universal clutch holder and the compression gauge.

That's a clear $200 not counting the new valves (the tip of the intake valve is chipped) and other bits & pieces.

lol I am an industrial mechanic so our tools are a little more "high end" than motorcycle mechanics tools.

Can't a basic slap hammer/slide hammer be made?
I'm a bit of a welder so it should be possible with the right salvaged parts from somewhere, cant it?.

This little project will do two things to me...
either

• 1. scare the flying "pee" out of me
  or
  2. it might actually be fun and I'll learn something new.

Ain't it swell being a mechanic? Here in Canuckada, we are the only trade that can't write our tools off on income tax, and we have/need more tools than any other trade by far.... the Beavers are not amused.



Slide hammers come in various sizes, bigger is more $$$, but can be overkill for most jobs on a bike. I got an old Proto slide hammer that takes 2 men and a small boy to operate, but it will break the bull gear off the input shaft of a pumpjack gearcase in the field. It's easier than yanking the whole pumpjack into the shop to press that gear off.

You won't need anything that big or expensive for your bike engine. Shop at local tool houses or supply stores, you can probably find one reasonably priced there. Stay off the Snap-On truck, they make their tools out of special steel alloyed with gold and titanium, and made by special genetically engineered Oompa-Loompa-style workers that have been trained to sacrifice body parts into the metal pour to add that special 'something' that only Snap-On has...... every 9/16 combination wrench has cost some poor Snappy-Whappy 3 fingers to make. Well... not really, but they charge like it did, lol.

You can make your own slide hammer, but be very careful how you attach the stop at the end that the sliding hammer strikes. If it is not attached strongly enough, it will break right off and that heavy hammer will smack whatever is right behind the hammer. With new users, that is usually a pair of gonads.

Its off to the automotive store tomorrow for sure. Let's leave that home-made stuff to last resort, shall we?

Gonna take some pics of the valves later; they are in bad shape IMO.
Can't wait to get those rocker arm shafts out and change those suckers.

if its properly welded it shouldnt break. However the slide I would make sure and "knurl" it for better grip if you do make one.

I can get treaded rods easily, the weight I think I can source, the bolt I have, the nuts come with the threaded rods and I have a welder. I think the recipe is complete. I'll try it before I spend $130.

never thought about buying rods already done that way. I have always just knurled it myself on the lathe.
