i was recently at a starbucks(ya i know) and a guy had a KTM, lookd like he was doing some serious cross country touring on it based on all the stickers i saw on it. lookd like it would be alot of fun not having to worry about the road conditions as much and take it on some trails once you get where your going

ive also seen the racing where they have half the track dirt with small jumps then half the track on pavement with lots of tight turns that looks really wild.

In tight twisties a dual sport can give sport bike riders fits. Unlimited cornering clearance and relatively light weight.
The bigger dual sports(KLR 650) also make decent light weight tourers.

AMEN. With a dual sport like mine on the street, you have a new outlook on everything. Curbs and obsticals become nothing more than a small bump in the road.

Well, dirt bikes get pretty messy because they are used in muddy track races while sport bikes are quite neat because they are used on the road and high speed highways..

I say get the dirtbike. It's gonna be cheaper. Plus you can ride it on the streets and still take it off road. Streetbikes don't ride good in the dirt, hehe.
