I must agree with the "wait outside" concept.
HOWEVER, in this age of snatched children, I can certainly understand the reluctance and refusal of a parent to leave a lone child outside the restroom in an AIRPORT. You'd think that there would be some other solution available. Maybe there is, just not publicized?
BUT, bringing older children into the locker room of the Y is a whole other issue. Especially when there are family locker rooms available. This is a NO NO NO!! I'd speak to the facility manager. It is their responsibility to enforce rules and make sure ALL patrons are comfortable.

Lots of other women had already told this "parent" to get out with her kids--I couldn't hear them because I was in the shower. I only heard the yelling. When I opened the curtain, in an instant I understood it all, and that poor little boy just staring and staring while I'm jumping for a towel--while mom took her time about finishing getting dressed. His younger sister was in there too. I'll bet what that kid saw is branded on his young brain and maybe he's thinking of some hard questions that should have waited years to arise. I'm still embarassed to think about it, what about him?!
The YMCA is very clear about the rules and shows new members the family locker rooms. This woman was just doing a terrible job of parenting. Too bad I see children brought into this locker room at least once a month. There's always an immediate outcry to get 'em out, but the moms hardly ever do.

It really depends on the kid. I would have allowed my son when he was 9 years old to wait right outside the restroom, but his cousin? No way. She was not mature enough to stay put and scream bloody murder if someone approached her. You have to know your kid, and know if they're mature enough. If not, and they haven't hot puberty yet, they go into the restroom, and screw whoever else doesn't like it.
Better the kids stay safe than worry too much about embarrassing someone else.
Locker rooms are different, for sure, but a restroom... take 'em in if you have to.

For the life of me, I will never understand this odd body taboo we have. Its as if there is something inherently sinful and dirty about the naked human form. Personally I feel that it is more damaging to a young child teaching them to be ashamed of their bodies or seeing person of the opposite gender in the buff is sinful or dirty. But that is just me.
Always ask why.

At the DIA airport, there is a large handwashing section where the Mom's son could have stood, and he would have still been in the restroom.
Also at the time I was in there, there was a cleaning lady emptying out the trash cans. The boy stood there, so I feel he would have stood by the sink as well. And as far as bodies go, well I am a nurse I see naked people everyday.

I follow a new highway I haven't traveled before.
