Ahh, my hair is starting to go away. This is a great point.

As one ages, growing back hair is not a problem.

I don't believe any flip -up helmets pass the SNELL approval tests, as the they involve side impact resistance. The structural integrity of the temple area of the modular helmet has been substantially compromised for the hinge assembly.

A few months after I had bought my Shoei TZR, I watched a guy give a demo. He grabbed the strap attachment points of a flipped-up new modular - Nolan or HJC IIRC - and flexed the sides of the helmet until they nearly touched.

I've also ridden through clouds of cicadas at speed, been picked off by rocks and debris kicked up by trucks, and even did a hail storm once on a Honda 350. I'll keep my full-face.

Snell's official answer on Flip ups, from the website's faq:

Why won't Snell certify some types of helmets like flip up front designs?
Snell does not dismiss out of hand any helmet design that strays from the conventional. Snell does not point out any design specifications other than general requirements in our standards. We are however, always concerned with innovations and new designs that may effect the helmet's ability to protect the wearer, or in some cases the helmets potential to cause injury. At present the Foundation has not had the opportunity to test any of the flip up front type helmets for certification. We do not find any fault with these designs as long as they are used according to the manufacturers instructions and meet all of the requirements of the standard. We will also certify any size of helmet as long as it meets the same requirements as any other Snell certified helmet.

I'd heard/read somewhere (not a forum, a book or mag article) that no fip/module helmets had been submitted to SNELL for testing - as the manufacturers expect them to fail.

Of course there is the point that SNELL may be harmful - by making helmets heavier and the test is unrealistic as it is unlikely that a helmet will take two consecutive hits to the same point.

But bending a helmet sideways with manual energy... I'd hate to hit the ground with that on my side. Squish my head like an egg.
