The Kaw 900 and 1500 are well reviewed by the folks I know riding them.

Seeing as you are planning to step down to a cruiser  from your dual-sport may I suggest you consider a Honda Valkyrie. Your upper cash limit is bringing you very close to some used examples of these wickedly potent "cruisers"... I know for a fact that a Road-King won't hold a candle to one...I owned a Valkyrie and have ridden the RK on many occasions.

The Valkyrie not only has a different look from all the other big road cruisers it also delivers in spades with the ultimate in seamless power and exceptional handling, with great comfort to boot. The engines and tranny are easily good for more than 300k miles before you have to even think about an overhaul of any sort.

The Valk comes in three flavours, Standard, Tourer and Interstate.

That is me with my '98 Valkyrie Standard.

I've seen some of those Valkyries for sale. They still cost a bit, but if I was going cruiser I definitely had thoughts about that.

The Valkyrie has to be one of Honda's best bets as a classic design. It does everything well and is instantly recognizable with that awesome engine on full display.

A Valkyrie will wheelie, even without carrying a rear passenger. So it will keep the hooligan entertained if need be.

If the valk won't keep a hooligan entertained, the blower kit for it will...

The '84-'87 Goldwings are my fave Goldwings. It was the last and the best incarnation of the Flat-4 and the Honda used to sell a bucket load of them. As a youth growing up in the 80s, I saw those Goldwings everywhere, garnished with every accessory known to mankind. Those were the glory days of the Goldwing. Today there just isn't that kind of a following.

Your friend's is a '84-'86 correct? It looks to be in very good condition. I also had a '86 Interstate in Wineberry Red at one time.
