I almost catapulted my.. ex off the back once. It was a comination of things that added up pretty fast. We'd just gone over a railroad track and all of a sudden the light up ahead turned yellow. I expected the two guys leading to run it. But me and the 4th bike would have to stop at the red light. Well everyone stopped, so I did a little emergency braking. The back shocks compressed even more (after the bump) and bottemed out, then immediately bounced back up. The lady on the back had not been paying attention at all (I could hear her singing to herself) and she became airborn. Fortunately she didn't fall off to far.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
I've been pillion on a lot over the years. Just recently I've been on bikes whose riders prefer pillions to use the grab rail.
It never feels safe to me as I am sitting on my hands and cant get the leverage to use a grab rail. Every blip on the throttle feels like its about to flip me off of the back so I have a tendancy to lean forwards which leads to a woodpecker effect when the rider brakes.
The best Pillion experience was probably with a friend Dave nearly three years ago now. He had this thing where the pillion grips their knees. On the UJM he had it felt very secure, but again braking was generally gradual and there were no throttle blips when he opened her up.

Even my mother has riden with me. That's because she's know she can trust me to ride with her like with an old lady.
There's a style of riding suitable for everyone.
