You're probably also tensing up a lot which can put a lot of strain on your wrists. It's one of those things that might get better with time (I hope).
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

You're probably right. Took it out again this morning for a bit and it was a lot better. I relaxed more and let the bike do the work. Things went much better and no wrist pain.

Sometimes it's just the new riding position, initially I got some discomfort with my wrists when I changed to the more forward position, but it's not an issue now.
