I was riding a really windy road in Texas near a stone quarry and came into a corner hot only to see that one of the quarry dump trucks had strewn gravel across the road.

It was foolish for me to be riding so close to the edge of the bike and my abilities because I had left no margin of error to deal with such a situation. Needless to say I low sided the bike. Luckily I had full gear which I always wear even in 95 F degree weather. My full face helmet was all tore up where my chin would have been. I was fine besides a few sore muscles and a bruise.

I would hate to think what my face would have looked like if I was wearing anything less than a full face helmet. I don't doubt that it would have torn my skin down to the bone without it...

Food for thought. You live, you learn. You don't live, game over.

I wish I had the link, but I read a study where they proved that after a certain speed, kinda low, like 35 or so, there is no difference in hearing ability at all from 3/4 to full face. I don't remember if they had no-helmet in there too.

I can attest to the fact that I hear better in my Shoie Full Face than I do in my work van with all the windows up, or my g/f's Camry, again with all windows up. And that's w/o the radio on. If the radio is on, I won't notice an ambulance until it's on top of me. :/

I always ride to work with a full face. Sometimes I'll ride with the half on the weekend. When my girlfriend jumps on the back, she wears my full face and I wear the half. It might just be because I'm not as tired or that I'm having more fun on the weekends, but I feel more alert when my face is open to the wind.

I really appreciate the feedback all. I have gotten to the point where, in my eyes, if I do go down, I have a 1 in 3 chance of losing the lower half of my face with a beanie helmet, not cool.

I just placed my order for my new full face. I suppose if nothing else, I have the choice of what I want to wear, but am asuming that I will have a new comfort level with the full face. I have already tired of taking june bugs in the face at 60+.

I decided to splurge and buy something really nice and comfortable, as it is my head.

Here is what I ordered: http://www.upnorthsports.com/Product/Pr ... l&_ID=7143

Thank you all!

RockBottom wrote:Statistically, 30% of motorcycle head injuries are to the jaw area so if you're not wearing a full face, you're at 70% of protection.

When I think of how often I have to stop and clean bugs off of my face shield, I know that I really don't want them hitting my face or mouth.
+1 I forgot about the bug issue. I had a nice, fat, bloody one hit my windshield the other day and thought if that had hit my face without my shield on it would have been a mess.

I've been hit so hard by a bug in the throat while driving my Honda Civic in Florida ages ago. Man that hurt. So, far mostly small bugs and I think maybe crickets on my motorcycle.

But even last week when I rode to work I got hit by bugs.

I wear a full face (HJC FS-10) helmet
When it's 104+ degrees out, I may briefly entertain thoughts of a half helmet, but looking at my old full face helmet, and the scars it has from a trip down the asphalt last year makes me happy to keep wearing full face helmets!
My face would be a lot uglier had I not been in a full face helmet

I got hit dead center of the shield by a locust a few weeks ago. I thought it was rock it hit me so hard! I was VERY glad of a full face at that point.

I've never had much issue with the heat, even when it was gawdawful here in June. But then, I always sweat, so I just don't notice.
