I hooked a trickle charger up to my Yamaha VStar and just let it do it's thing over the winter. I was told if you don't ride the bike and rev her up you really won't charge the battery.

In addition to the battery tender (which, as others have said, you hook up like normal. I keep my 06 Daytona trackbike on a tender whenever it isn't actually running.), you may consider putting a fuel stabilizer in the tank. Having lived in WI, I seem to recall that the 'too cold to ride' season started around October and ended sometime in April... probably enough time to let your fuel go stale if you don't treat it.

More than enough time. Fuel today is krap. Starts going bad in 6-8 weeks. Make sure you buy new fuel stabilizer too, don't use last year's - it's not that expensive, no sense in taking false economies.

Also don't just dump the stabil in the gas tank and call it a day. Run the bike so the gas that is insided the carb has stabil in it too.
