if you keep your eyes open and do some searching, a newer ninja 650 is completely possible with low miles and no visible blemishes. just gotta be patient and persistent. you might need to finance or work out some payment deal on a bit of it depending on if you buy private party or dealership, but it can be done.

Edit: I'm liking the look of the FZ6, what are opinions on this guy?
i have an fz6 and love it. it has a detuned r6 motor that is nice and pleasant under ~7k and perfect for around town and commuting. but once you hit ~8k it turns into a bit of a beast. i can have a nice pleasant ride to work (55 mhp) in 6th gear... or i can break the speed limit laws before i get going good in second gear. the seating position is great. pretty upright... but enough of a lean to not put loads of pressure on the spine. i also have an engine guard on my bike. this has allowed me to fit highway pegs. i've done some long distance riding and have no issues. i don't have any plans of getting a new bike any time soon.

it'll be more biased opinions... but the fz6-forum.com is a wealth of info on these bikes. drop over and do some reading. oh, and because of the lack of plastic and (i assume) the seating position they are much cheaper to insure.

hope that helps some

That helps a lot, thank you! I'll go peruse their forum too for some more info. Really I just need to get out this next week and start sitting on some of these bikes. Definitely leaning toward the FZ6 or Ninja 650 currently.

got a 2002 Fazer600 FZS (before the FZ6), and it's wicked. There's lots of support for extras, and its a sought after bike here.
Tried the CBR600F for a while, and it hurt my lower back, got all hunched over after a bit of riding. Fazer 600's got a half fairing, but mine's got a Yamaha double-bubble screen (less windblast), and you can get belly pans to make it look even hotter.

It's good

I have a friend who rides one and he loves it. This bike will do it all. You can outfit it for touring or carving through the canyons, it's pretty much up to you. I think they are great bikes and you can get good deals on late model used ones also.

Some great choices metioned above. I would agree with all of them depending on what direction you want to go. The SV650's great torque, FZ6 high revving rush, CBR corner killer (but a uncomfortable long distance), Ninja650R or ER6N/F great newly designed bikes and don't forget the Bandit 600 or 650 as well and the Honda 599 (beautiful in Candy red!). The V-strom 650 is great if you want comfort, ld touring and dual sport.

Ended up getting a nice deal on a 2007 Ninja 650 with a good assortment of aftermarket parts. I am seriously loving this bike!
