Yeah sometimes on my vs800 if I try to go from neutral to first while sitting still I have to let out on the clutch lever a little bit before it will go into gear

Joe is that a flooded transmission? If so have you changed the oil recently?
I was having trouble with mine and changed the oil. Most problems disappeared.
That said, I still need to shift back to second to get first gear on occasion.

It could also be a bent shifter fork or a worn cog.

This happens to me quite often as I drive in NYC traffic. I was puzzled at first, but then I got a few tips from other motorcycle riders.
1. When coming to a stop light, (assuming you downshifted in a rush) try to shift all the way down to first and then ride in first for a little while before stopping, then shift into N.
2. Rev up a bit before the light change, and kick down firmly to make sure you're completely engaged.
3. (The most helpful one for me) If you are at a red light and you can't get the bike into N / first gear, let out the clutch almost to engaging (you may stall until you find the perfect spot). The bike will make a low *clunk* sound and settle into the proper gear, allowing you then to shift into N or whatever you please.

When stopped in traffic it should remain in first.

I understand that you may have on occasion, not enough time to shift all the way down in mad traffic. Can you please explain to me why you want to be in neutral. Most riders will only ever see neutral when their bike is on the centre stand and you are cleaning the back wheel or chain.
if it is a habit of yours to kick into neutral and then sit up on your bike at stops, then it is a bad habit which I would encourage you not to do.
