Is the battery the type you have to periodically fill with distilled water? If so what is the level? Those types of batteries go bad if not used for a while. First I would go for a good battery tender/ charger that desulfates and deal with the current battery. If the battery's beyond repair then at least you'll have a good charger on hand for the future.

If you do decide to ride it to charge it, don't STOP riding it until you get to a place with either a phone, or you're back home.

You don't want to find out that your battery is indeed dead, as mine is right now, in the middle of nowhere.
