rapidblue: if you have the time, yes new wiring will help. Keep a camera handy so that you can take pix of the ahrness as you're dismantling it.

If I may say so, that is a beautiful bike you have there :)

yes, you may say so.

as the weekend nears my mind is becoming more set on rewiring the bike. Unless the problem is osmething simple like a loose connector, it's probably going to happen

Rewiring isn't too terribly difficult, but it is time consuming.

Plus you (or the next owner) will be SOL if you need to use a wiring diagram. (the colors will be different)

If you have continuity on all of your wires, I see no need to rewire the bike.

Simply take some emry paper (very fine) and clean up the corrosion on all the terminal connectors. Then, use some dielectric grease in the plug fittings to prevent future corrosion

so i took a look at the wiring,

the previous owner put in a battery with reversed poles, the wire that was connected to the neg terminal is red and has a fuse and the wire connected to the pos terminal is also red with 6in of balck wire on the end. That got me wondering about the rest of the wiring.

The battery does need to be hooked up pos-fuse wire & neg to ground right? because for some reason the lights still worked as is, and it started before...hmmm..

That IS weird....I'd take a serious look at ALL the wiring while you're in "down time" anyhow. Make sure everything is cool...it'll save you much hassle in the future. Wiring is weird...it may be screwed up and not give you any inclination until one day...bam...no start or no this or no that.

Take the extra hours now...you'll be glad ya did in the future!!

Some older bikes have a positive ground system ... do you have a factory manual or something for the bike?

well all I have is this

Image

and the fact that the battery that is listed for the bike has the positive terminal on the side of the red/fuse wire and the battery that is in there has the neg terminal on the red/fuse wire.

I just assumed it was a neg ground from this and te recommended battery

ok this bike is starting aggravate me.

took the bike apart tonight. checked all the wires, they are all good, all the connections are snug and as they should be.

one thing i did notice was that on the generation("ignition dymano" in the above picture, one of the points sets was not in contact with the center spindle...is this a problem?

also could the regulator be an issue? would a regulator from a newer bike be useable in my bike?

I feel for ya...I had a heck of a time getting my current bike to run...

If you have spark (and I assume there is no way the coil wires got reversed between the cylinders) then maybe it is a fuel issue after all. I've had petcocks crap out on me before.

I would prime the carbs and see if that helps...

all ya need is fuel, spark at the right time, and compression...somethings missing...hope you find it soon!! :righton:
