Freeway riding: Right or Left lane?

If riding alone, I favor riding on the right side of the leftmost/inside/fast lane. IMHO, riding on the right side of the lane "stakes your claim" over the lane and discourages people from cutting into your lane (to overtake or whatever). Plus you get a bigger buffer on your left. All this changes in reaction to different variables; riding in a group instead of alone, traffic speed in the fast lane, weather, etc.

I live in the fast lane. Not as much going on, and it's smoother. The shoulder is usually cleaner, too, in case I ever need to use it.
