Is it even being positioned as an adventure tourer? The 650 wasn't, and I doubt that this will be either. That said, I think this will suit the 90+ % of people with GSes who never take them off-road anyway. Sometimes all anyone wants is an upright seating position, no weight on your wrists, and a lot of legroom.
What do most of us do with our bikes? Commute on them, maybe do a few errands, take em to the twisties on sunday mornings, and tour on when we've got the time.
I suspect the 650 Versys will be more, uh, versatile, but the 1000 seems to be just as suited for all those roles, while likely being more comfortable than a sportbike, and having some of the weather protection and luggage capacity of a tourer, but without the excess bulk.
As for the looks . . . well, it isn't exactly pretty. But none of the adventure tourers (or adv-styled bikes) are either.*
* PS, I've got a Rockster, and therefore, I'm not exactly a reliable judge of whether a bike is good looking or not
