i realized how it happened because i did it with my hondamatic bobber. i took a short ride and then pulled plugs. the spark plug socket i was using didn't have the rubber holder, dropped plug as i was putting it back in, closed the gap, didn't check before installing

As a late note of context- airplane mechanics who work on piston-engine planes have a rule.
The rule is - if you drop a spark plug, the next sound that should be heard is that of the plug going into the trash can. And those are NOT cheap spark plugs.
Not only can electrodes change gap, but the porcelin insulator can get cracked and you probably won't see it but it'll cause trouble later. (up to engine fire in flight - doesn't get much more serious than that)
