And here I thought since my Metzelers had worn out at 6K, that they were an abnormally soft tire intended for mostly off road use. They came stock on my Dakar and need replacing. I thought I would shop for a longer lasting tire, but it sounds like that's about right for a motorcycle tire.
In any case, any good suggestions out there for a dual-sport tire that works in the dirt and lasts fairly well on the street? I know when it comes to my 4x4 tires, that's a complete contradiction. I'm sure that's the case with bikes, but I don't know the tire options for bikes.

I think the Bridgestone Spitfires and Battlax are the dual compound tires. The Dunlop 491 Elite II's are also good mileage tires.

I wore out the last set of Dunlop 505s on my Nighthawk in about 10K miles. Actually, the front could have gone a few more thousand, but I decided to to them both at the same time. The Bridgestone Battlax BT-45s I put on are working out great. After 4K miles, they're looking like they'll get me at least another 6K. The bonus is that the dual compound construction makes them stick to curves much better than the old tires. It used to be that you had to make a tradeoff between sticky tires and long-lasting tires. This dual compound stuff is great.
