Countersteering

It's instinctive for me, but I had a hell of a time transitioning between countersteering, and low speed steering. Took awhile to figure that one out.

Radar and Henriettaah, if you want to see for yourselves, it's simple. Get on your bike, get up to a decent speed and GENTLY push on your right handlebar, then on your left. Come back later and tell us what happened, trust me, no-one will be surprised...

This is all pretty intersting. I'm just glad I can do it without thinking about it. I would hate to have to learn it. Gotta love the human brain.

riding a push bike is exactly the same, when you were rolling down those big hills with the rush of wind in ya hair and ya need to turn left at the bottom, you did so by countersteering.

Im surprised that good knowledge of counter steering is not a prereq' in your countries in order to obtain a license??

overhere in my state, countersteering education is a compolsory technique that you are required to demonstrate both effective knowledge of and practicle use of , under examininer conditions, in order to be licensed.

BTW my bike starts (CS) at about 20 kmh.


oh and, ya can just sit on your bike with the side stand down with ya feet on the pegs, and push the bars, you will notice if you push right your weight and bike will shift to the right.

Quite frankly, I don't think the instructors should bring it up at all. It's so instinctual, there are probably thousands of seasoned riders that don't even know about it, but have been doing it for years. Introducing such concepts to a newbie rider is dangerous, in my opinion, since they're likely to be so worried about which direction to turn at which speed that it becomes a distraction. Countersteering is instinctual, and even when you do it you are typically just barely turning the bars off center, so just leave the students alone in that respect so they can direct more attention to traffic and other threats.

im not sure i agree its instinct. i mean what part of our genetic code has that in it? its just not something natural to do, even walking is learned. i think the brain just learns to do it given the chance pretty fast. most people are confused by the thought of turning the oppesite way but those same people usually would be confused by alot of other things too. i know a guy who could not understand the concept of counter steering or engine braking, just could not figure them out(amongst other things). when i explaind how hes counter steering every time he rides he said i was crazy lol. so i think the msf has to teach it or youll have people thinking they can turn the handle bars like they turn the wheel of a car and that would be bad.

instinct and the brain learning to do it without you knowing your learning is different to me. like riding a bicycle, most people cant explain How that works but can do it, its not instinct.

instinct is the urge inside of you that you have to drink water and eat, its built in knowledge. counter steering a motorcycle i doubt is built into the human brain. why would it be? man wasnt ment to be riding on two wheels with a motor.

Ignorance is bliss. I'd been riding for close to thirty years before I heard that countersteering was being taught to beginners. It all came naturally and I never gave it any thought....sounds to me like a load of extra stuff to confuse the issue.
