I've got into the following routine which seems to work pretty well. When I get round to it.
Rinse bike down with a low pressure hose pipe to remove any grime you might later rub into the paintwork.
Next clean all the greasy bits with some kind of degreaser (wheels, chain, bits near the chain, anywhere else).
Wash the bike down and get into the fiddly little spaces (dependent on time available and degree of obsession) with water and household detergent.
Rinse with low pressure hose.
Dry with sponge.
Finish off with furniture polish (Mr Sheen is as good as any). Does the job nicely.
Finally, in the winter, spray engine and vulnerable bits with WD40 or Scottoiler stuff (Whatever is available) helps to prevent water and salt damage.
Put bike to bed under a waterproof cover.
