for bikes, probably, for engines in general, its hard, all the great classic muscle car engines, the boss302, corvetter L88 is great, the true dodge hemis, those sound amazing as well.

Sporty V-Twin engines with a nice full aftermarket system definitely sound the best, to me at least. But, I guess I am a bit biased.

A road king with dual exhaust pipes you could put a tennis ball in the end is where it's at. Not sporty but it's a v-twin

I can think of a few other car engines that sound as good if not better than the best sounding muscle cars.
Porsche 911 comes to mind.
any of the V12 ferraris.
Nissan Skyline GTR, Nissan 240Z
Ferrari 360 modena (about the only flat plane v8 that sounds good).
I find most bike engines to sound quite nice though. The exception being singles. To me singles sound like a farm implement. The rumble of a v-twin, the growl of a triple, the roar of a v4, or the scream of an inline 4 all sound good to me. actually that pretty well describes the sound made by those types of engines.

I personally prefer the RR merlin V12 myself. And the Spitfire or P51 that goes with it.

Yes it's hard to go past those babies.....what about the P38?

the 38 had a pair of allison v8s. nowhere near as powerful as the merlin was.
though oddly enough the fastest prop fighter of WW2 was of all things a Kawasaki

Actually the P-38 had a pair of liquid cooled Allison V-12 engines. In their supercharged versions, they put out similar power as the Packard built RR Merlin in the P-51.
P-51D - 1625hp
P-38M - 1600hp x2
The P-51 originally switched from Allison to RR because the early versions of the Allison were not supercharged for high altitude operation.
