Jeeze, I'm an IDIOT! I should have known that

Here's what to do:
1. Wrap old battery in a couple grocery-store bags or small box to conceal the fact it's a battery.
2. Carefully place in garbage can so it doesn't turn over and disolve other things in garbage can.
3. Wait for automatic garbage truck to pick up can and dump into truck, then fuggetaboutit.
4. Buy new battery.

Yes, adding table salt to a battery WILL create hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas. And yes, it is very toxic.

NaCl + H2SO4 --> NaHSO4 + HCl

Please just go buy a new battery.

That's kind of what I wanted to say, but I was trying to be more gentle. Actually, I'd take it to the auto parts store so they could get rid of it in a little more environmentally responsible way, but I wouldn't spend a lot of time on something that I really need to be able to trust and I can get it for $30
