how did you mean a new one for under 4k? ...lol, it sounds too good to be true
I'm sorry, I was thinking of Ninja 250 prices. I had no idea those extra 250 ccs were so expensive.

just got a quote from GEICO, for the ninja 500, $2,200 ! more than half the bikes price but i guess i have no choice......GEICO is the only company i've heard of that has "good" rates for motorcycles but doesn't seem like it.....what insurance company do you guys work with?

I have a 2003 EX500 insured with GEICO. It costs $435 per year for full coverage... but I also have a 19-year clean driving record; all of them with GEICO.

The EX500 is a great first bike. It has plenty of power, but it does take a good roll on the throttle to use it, so it's harder to get into trouble by mistake.

I think that price is reasonable if the bike is in good shape. I paid $3500 for my '03 a few months ago, which was about what others were selling for in my area. It was in excellent shape with only 500 miles. It's still in excellent shape, but with a few more miles.

I didn't own a bike for the last 19 years; this is my first. Insuring drivers/riders your age is expensive. You are much more likely to make use of your insurance in the first few years of driving. I imagine my car insurance was much higher when I was 16, but I was blessed enough to not have to pay for it.

Insurance is going to be expensive for you, but make sure you shop around. I am over 30 and have a perfect record and I also got some ridiculous qoutes.

Try Farmers,State Farm,Geico or many others. Google a term, you should get tons of insurers. Most will give you online qoutes, so it will be fast and painless and you will be assured of getting a fair price.

Also, consider getting a bike with a half fairing, because small spills are common. If you do get a full faired bike, pick up some frame sliders. Most people will swear by them, they have personally saved me hundreds of dollars.

If you get a ninja 500, full coverage isnt essential and will probably cost way too much. Just get liablity and uninsured motorist coverage, you should be ok.

Actually I've heard that State Farm has the best insurance rates for bikes.

When I insured mine, they asked the engine size and that was about it. For full coverage I'm paying less than $800.00 per year on a Hayabusa 1300.

I'd be sure to check out progressive. Progressive insurance in general seems to target higher risk drivers (a surprisingly large number) and that's where they do most of their business so they can offer a lower price to high risk drivers (young, lots of tickets/crashes, that driving cat from SNL)

:welcome: to the forum Mike!

Yes, I think your choice of the Ninja 500R is a good one. :D Smart move my friend.

Your insurance will go down as you get older and have more riding experience. Did you take an MSF course? If not, take it, it will save you A LOT on insurance plus increase your skills.

I had Jevco insurance for my bikes and they were really good. Now I'm on Wawanessa insurance.

I pay $95 per year for my 1982 Yamaha XJ650R, 1 Million liability only. My wife pays $145 for her 1981 Honda CB400T (liability only).

So if you go for an old used bike you can get quite cheap insurance. They made the 500 Ninja from the late 80's to today with very little updates.

Mike.
