600 miles dosn't seem like a short amount before having to have matience, especially if it's every 600 and $250 everytime..

It's not that often every time. The 600-mile checkup/oil change is only for new bikes as their "break-in" maintenance. After that oil changes can be done every 3,000 miles or as prescribed in your bike's owner's manual. Please people, read your owner's manuals. The information you seek is usually right there.

"The Essential Guide to Motorcycle Maintenance" by Zimmerman, along with your bike model's maintenance manual would be great information sources for doing your own maintenance.
