See, we've had this problem with Quebec wanting to be a sovereign nation for many years now. They even went so far as to call a "Referendum" on the issue a few years ago, where Quebec wanted to seperate from the rest of Canada and put it to a vote... it was defeated by a very narrow margin. It's been an issue ever since and the Parti Quebecois, the main separitist political party in Quebec (aka" those seperatist b*stards) have a mandate to ensure that the issue never dies. They've just elected a new leader who has promised to make their dream a reality: New PQ Leader.
The problem with a vote like that is that only the people who are impassioned about it will actually show up TO vote. The people who REALLY care one way or another.

Even if they had separated, within a decade they would have come crawling back. The only thing Quebec has going for it is people, no real natural resources, just lots of workers.

Since the beginning of recorded history the locals have always blamed the newcomers for their problems. Each generation thinks everything would be better if the new people weren't getting my piece of the pie. If you want your community to be better the only person who can start the change is looking back at you in the mirror. I imagine that the people who really run this planet laugh uncontrollably when the kinda poor blame the really poor for their problems.

You didn't invent the place, you're just farking it up until the next guy starts squatting on your property. You weren't the first and you won't be the last. If you had nothing and no prospects you'd go somewhere that did and so would I and anyone else who's worth a schiat. None of us picks where we are born, we all just make the most of it. You drew a good straw and got born into a wealthy country - somehow you've still screwed it up to the point that you sit around and stew about the 'immigrant problem' all day. Damn - if life sucks that bad, move or work harder, but it gets old hearing you blame it on everybody else. We got lots of immigrants here in Seattle - some of them are idiots and thieves. Some of them will work you under the table and then share a meal with you. Just like the rest of us Americans. I got my job and my house because I bust azzz all day. Anyone with a bigger brain who's smart enough and willing to work harder for it and can do my job better than me is welcome to it. I don't foresee any problems.

It will be interesting to see how, over time, modern diversity compares with nationalistic unity in our country. I probably won't be around for the end of the experiment, but maybe someone surviving the test will land near me wherever I might be.
If immigrants refuse to/cannot assimilate, there will always be trouble.

I think a country needs to have ONE common language. And every citizen should be able to speak it. It just makes sense, you need to be able to communicate to ever hope of having anything like Unity. Imagine being married to someone you couldn't understand and who couldn't understand you. You may live in the same house, but it's 2 different lives being lived in close proximity. A country with a significant portion of the population who can't(or won't) speak the same language is just like that. There is no national focus, just regional 'Me First'-ism and squabbling for attention/money/power from the supposed 'Ruling Government' and the money that brings.

Except for recent immigrants pretty much all of Canada can speak English. That's why there are laws in Quebec saying that French needs to be written twice as large as English for any sign posted. It'd be to easy to simply destroy the language.

By the 2nd generation from landing the vast majority of immigrant families are fluent in English.
