The older Nighthawks were really leaning towards the cruiser department. My '82 felt a lot more like a cruiser than a standard to me. But the old ones were on CB frames.
The newer ones definitely are more of a standard though.

Some bike recommendations for you.
Since you like the cruisers.
Honda shadow VLX
Yamaha V-star 650 (being a younger guy you might like the custom better)
Kawasaki Vulcan 500
Harley Sportster 883 (probably wont find one of these for $2500)
Suzuki Marauder 800
Suzuki Volusia 800
Kawasaki Vulcan 800
Yamaha Virago 535 and 650
All of these aside from the Vulcan 500 have v-twins
Most of these are not hard to find used either
And they are small enough to be quite forgiving for a new rider but big enough that you wont grow out of them for a year or two.
My personal bike could be added to this list even though its more of a cruiser styled standard, though it may be a bit older than what you are wanting.
I ride an 80 Honda CX500C. Its a UJM but looks kinda like a cruiser, though the seat height and riding position say standard. It has a v-twin and shaft drive and around 50hp (which puts it right in the middle of that list of cruisers I named off in the power dept). Its a nice bike but Im guessing you want something newer.
