I had pretty much the same thing when I bought my kz650. After a new battery, and plugs, no problem.
Remember, lugging around can foul plugs! I learned this the hard way, and the previous owner had the wrong heat range in two cylinders to try and counteract bad carb synch (oh brother!).
You can check your charging system after they get it running for you by putting a multimeter on the battery when it's running. You'll see it doesn't charge much probably below 3500 rpm. Even then, it's not a huge charge...probably no more than 14.2 volts, which will pretty much be a maintenance charge. Check you battery by taking a voltage reading as you push the starter button. It shouldn't drop below 10 volts, or you need a charge on the battery. Good luck...Oh how was it running before this?
