A bunch of people at my firm ride harleys. Seems like a TON of bike. At least aesthetically speaking, I lean more toward Triumph Bonnies or Ducati Monsters, but I have yet to sit on one. I've got people telling me I'm going to need a rather large bike due to my height.

Yea, I dont care much for the "geezer glides" either. My bike is about the same size as a Triumph Bonnie.

With the H-D plant about 10 miles from my house (they build Sportsters and V-Rods) there are a LOT or Harleys here in KC.
I don't mind competition and brand/model loyalty, and friendly ribs, but I think a few of the comments in the "don't wave" thread were a tad over the edge.
My younger brother has always owned BMW, Ducati, Suzuki, and Honda bikes. He used to make nasty Harley comments, but shut them down when I told him a 2006 Sportster is in my plans next year.
Overall, I do like the friendliness of TMW forums. I would like to find some XL specific places to visit, though.....

welcome to the site dean.dont think theres a anti harley slant to the site.personally its just another bike.cant say i love but dont particually hate them either,same feeling towards sports bikes.prefer big naked muscle bikes myself.each to his own ay?.xjrjohn

Color me amped about the MSF course. This has been on the back burner for quite some time. Just got some over-the-ankle boots yesterday that I'm breaking in for the course, some Bates Enforcer CTS 2400's with Gore Tex.

I don't know anything about Bates, but for us cheapskate riders, Most sturdy hiking boots are sufficient for protection while riding. There is a Hi-Tec factory outlet store a stone's throw from my house, and I bought a pair of full leather, insulated waterproof Magnums about 10-12 inches high for $37.00.

Wow. Sounds like a good deal. I ended up parting with about $130.
If they do the job, though, I'll consider it money well spent.

Well in all honesty, you really can't put a price on good protection, but if it weren't for cheap alternatives I wouldn't be protected.
My current protection? Helmet - KBC bought used from the same guy I got my bike from - $50.00.
Jacket - Leather insulated black "traditional biker style" that I got on sale for $75.00.
Gloves - black armored first gear gloves free from bike seller.
Shoes - $37.00 Hi-tec Magnums.
Pants - Only jeans so far.
I do wear long-johns underneath, as it is still cold in these parts. They probably won't help much in the area of protection though. I hope to get some good overpants soon.
