The more hp and acceleration you have the more brakes you need. If you get the bike, work on your throttle control the more you give it the more it will give you. Even sport bikes can be sedate if you ride them that way. It's all about practice. stay in a large parking lot for as long as you think you need to and when you do venture out on the road stay within posted speed limits. Posted speed limits are a good indicator of how fast a road can be traveled in the best of conditions. If it's wet, or dark out you want to go even slower then that. Be easy on the throttle and the bike will be easy on you, but considering your post (Dichotomous) about detuning you may want to save this one as a second bike.

My V-Star 650 only put out 32-35hp and around 40hp after air kit mod.

I'd also agree to get an SV but you will need a lot of practice. From what I've heard, it is not easy but doable to control SV, you will need to pratice a lot of low speed and panic braking. I believe I recommended you before to get in touch with SCLR (Socal Let's Ride), There are more than a couples who ride SV in that group. There are also novinces and experience which will have monthly parking lot pratice.
