I'll email you when I pull them again. Since it's bogging down over the midrange, does that mean that the main jet is clogged up?

no it means that the slow jets are clogged or the jet needles need cleaning or the emulsion tubes or the diaphragms aint working right--you need to slow down and do thus job right or you will be pulling them carbs from now on---if you dont tell me what series carbs you have--VD58A--or--VD58C-- i cant help you.

Decided to do the job right. The carbs are 58 c. I have them pulled and I'm not putting them back on until I do everything I need to do. I have the boots on the engine sealed with plastic bags and rubber bands to keep anything from falling in there for the duration.

VD58C are the better carbs.keep the parts separate on the carbs--take floats out of carbs--remove slow jets --main jets and emulsion tubes that main jets screw into--do not try to remove idle jets the ones with the tiny hole in them--they wont come out--take diaphragm covers off -pull diaphragm and jet needle out--on the side of jet needles toward top is a number stamped in them---if the carbs have ever been apart some of the parts will be out place--#on needles for #1 and 4 carbs is 2VF--#2 and 3 carbs is 2VE--emulsion tubes are different on front and rear--check and clean out all tiny holes in emulsion tubes--go to radio shack and get-1 package of 64-3022 washers --this will get rid of the flat spot in carbs--are the main jets #105 or 108??? slow jets #38??

I'm about to take them off to clean them again. Where do I do with the washers from radio shack?

you put one of the #4 washers under each of the jet needles if it has #105 main jets.
the whole pack of washers cost $1.99.

When I take the carbs off to clean them again this weekend. How should I go about it. Should I take them off the plate holding them together and dip it. Or should I use spray carb cleaner and just run something like heavy fishing line in every opening I can find.

the choice to separate the carbs from the plenum or not is yours. if you do you can do a better job of cleaning them plus you can replace the 20 year old fuel pipe o rings before they start leaking.all the throttle linkage and choke linkage is a complicated puzzle.if you are going to separate the carbs from plenum take a bunch of pictures before you start.there is no info on this in the manuals i have seen.place the whole rack on a towel before you start as when you separate the carbs from each other there are 5 springs that will fall out.dont lose them.have the plugs been removed from the pilot screws yet??? p.s.getting the phillips head screws out that hold the carbs to plenum will require a impact driver with a good bit in it.you need to clean the jet needles with 0000 steel wool.the idle jets can be cleaned with a wire pulled from a handheld wire brush.
