Well I think its a lot better article and gives more to think about then advise like:

"huh? How hard can it be? Just get a 100lbs sandbag, wrap a jacket around it, and drop it off a pickup truck. Better yet, put the jacket on a crash test dummy. "

I was researching jackets last year and read all of the self serving articles to hopefully come up with a decision on what to buy, so I think I know what the question was and some of the answers I was looking for.

In regards to pounds of force and other scientific measurements that could be a figment of somebody's imagination...you may want to read this article which lists some of the tests that can be done on textiles.

http://www.amc.army.mil/amc/pa/releases03/tests.html

Don't find anything here about a pickup and a sandbag, although this could be a valid test.

Sheesh....just trying to help the person looking for information.

Well, since Denier is a measurement of average filament density wouldn't a higher density material be more resistant to abrasions (assuming a non-brittle material)?

From what I understand yes, but only if you are talking about the same material. i.e. 1000 denier cordura would be more abrasion resistant than 500 denier cordura. However, that doesn't mean that 1000 denier polyesther is more abrasion resistant than 500 denier cordura: that's not an apples to apples comparison.

Went with the Fox Creek Leather Vented Cordura jacket.

Great jacket for up here in Canada on the "Wet Coast" as it is waterproof and with a removable liner. Fox Creek sent me a size up based on e-mails traded back and forth and my generous waist - and I can't say enough about the fit.

I had gone to the dealerships with my wife and tried on the usual suspects which generated howls of laughter (size, colour, style) or just plain uncomfortable sitting on a cruiser. (Do they test these jackets before cutting?) So I took a chance on this based on the good reviews as well as a recommendation from an acquaintance back east. Totally satisfied with this purchase.

Now trying to find a good reasonably priced helmet...another story

I have Joe Rocket phoenix jacket & pants. I am concerned that they might not provide enough protection -- at least according to some of the things I read. Of course I was not able to find any actual tests, so this is all hearsay. Am I right in looking for an upgrade or am I just being paranoid?

thanks,

Eugene

A friend of mine ended up testing his Joe Rocket Ballistic Jacket the hard way. After sliding for 50 feet the jacket was still in near perfect condition and he didn't have any road rash above his waist (his legs were another story as he was only wearing jeans)
